web ring
Definition
A means for navigating a group of related sites primarily by going forward and backward.
Information
Web rings are large-scale grassroots phenomena made up primarily of
small/midsize sites. The number of web rings and member sites runs into
the millions.
Anyone may create a web ring on just about any topic, as the diversity
of current web ring topics will attest. After creating a ring, the ring
owner is responsible for attracting and approving applicants. Approved
sites become part of the web ring navigational structure.
The primary means of navigation is using the "next" and
"previous" links, although other options such as "random
site" and "complete list" often exist.
The original web ring system, originally located at webring.org (now part of Yahoo!), is still the most popular.
