Why?
There Was A Need
In the beginning, there was a need. Specifically, the need of Sean,
the site's publisher. A need to set up a collection of bookmarked sites
and articles in a useful structure; hence the plethora of off-site
links. Guess what? It works. The author uses it regularly. Why does this matter? It ensures that
the site will be updated frequently with new terms
and new content for existing terms.
Client Resource Site
There was another need. The need of clients and potential clients
to get up to speed on basic terminology related to online marketing.
Explaining basic online marketing concepts one at a time was killing productivity. Something had to be done. Write once, read
many is better than write once, read once.
To Give Something Back
Really. There was a huge indebtedness to all of the great online marketers
who have made contributions to the industry. There still
is. There are too many to mention here, but you can find them at the
best online marketing resources, guaranteed. They are individuals who
have worked to make online marketing accessible to anyone willing to
take the time to learn, while at the same time urging marketers to work
for their visitors, not against them. In short, they are helping
to build a sustainable industry that works for everybody.
To Create a Hype-Free Zone
At its worst, online marketing is tremendous waste of time for everyone involved. Email spam, blinking banners, usenet spam, neon banners, search engine spam, huge splash pages, scams, schemes, hype, hype, and more hype... it is no wonder users have learned to ignore anything that hints of marketing. It is a natural defense mechanism. Without this important survival skill, users would never get anything accomplished.
Worse yet, many legitimate businesses are caught in the crossfire between overzealous marketers and frustrated users. Cutting through clutter to reach jaded users will always be a challenge. Cutting through hype to learn about online marketing should not be a challenge.
